Magnesium: Forms, Dosage & Timing

Magnesium is one of the most commonly purchased supplements – and one of the most frequently chosen incorrectly. Because "magnesium" is not all the same: the form, dosage, and timing determine its effect. Here's an overview without marketing fluff.

Why Magnesium?

Among other things, magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, energy metabolism, and the reduction of fatigue. The daily requirement for adults is roughly 300–400 mg (NRV: 375 mg). Athletes, heavy sweaters, and stressed individuals often have increased needs.

Comparison of the Most Important Forms

  • Magnesium Bisglycinate – bound to the amino acid glycine, well-tolerated and popular for evening use. Stomach-friendly.
  • Magnesium Citrate – good bioavailability, can have a mild laxative effect at higher doses.
  • Magnesium Oxide – high elemental content, but poorer absorption. More economical than optimal.
  • Magnesium Malate – bound to malic acid, often used during the day.

Multi-complexes combine several forms to balance tolerability and absorption – e.g., the Magnesium 4-fold Complex or the 6-fold Complex with B6.

How Much Per Day?

As a supplement, 200–375 mg of elemental magnesium is often beneficial – ideally spread throughout the day, as the body absorbs smaller amounts better. Pay attention to the "elemental magnesium" content, not the total weight of the compound.

When is the Best Time to Take it?

  • Evening: Bisglycinate is often taken before sleep due to the glycine component.
  • After Exercise: to support muscle function.
  • With a Meal: often improves tolerability.

What to Look For When Choosing

Well-dosed form, transparent indication of elemental content, as few additives as possible, and – for the halal-conscious choice – plant-based capsules instead of gelatin. More on this in the Halal Overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which magnesium form is the best?

There isn't "one best." Bisglycinate is well-tolerated and popular in the evening; citrate has high bioavailability. Complexes combine several forms.

Magnesium in the morning or evening?

Both are possible. Many prefer it in the evening (especially bisglycinate). More important than the timing is regular intake.

Can I take too much magnesium?

Very high doses from supplements can lead to loose stools. Stick to the recommended daily dose and spread it out if necessary.

Is magnesium halal?

The mineral itself is not problematic. Pay attention to the capsule shell (plant-based instead of gelatin) and excipients.
